Penampang is a district as well as a small town (Penampang Proper) within the West Coast Division of Sabah, Malaysia. It has virtually become a suburb of Kota Kinabalu which is Sabah's capital. Its population was estimated to be around 132,002 in 2000, with ethnic Kadazan-Dusun as the majority.

The name penampang came from an old village within the district. The village's name in turn originates from a Kadazan word that means "big rock". This is because huge rocks were easily found within the vicinity of the village a long time ago.

The name Penampang in contemporary usage refers more often to the district, with the town of Donggongon as the main town within the district. Donggongon means 'shelter' or 'rest area' in the native Kadazan language, referring to its historical role as a stop-over for people from the hills who journeyed down the coast for trade. Other towns or sub-districts within Penampang are Putatan and Lok Kawi.

Penampang is often considered a stronghold of the Kadazan community, and the main centre for their political and cultural development. The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) community hall hosts many of Kadazan's traditional festivities, chief among them the annual Kaamatan or 'harvest festival', their most important cultural event.

The Monsopiad Cultural Village is in Penampang. Monsopiad was the name of a past warrior who was known for decapitating the heads of his enemy and hanging the skulls at the entrance of his home, to warn his enemies of his powers.

Penampang is administered by Majlis Daerah Penampang ( Penampang District Council ).

Donggongon is a town in the West Coast Division of Sabah, Malaysia. The town is located within the district of Penampang, but today it can be considered as part of the greater metropolitan area of Sabah's capital city, Kota Kinabalu. As of 2007, it has a population of 78,086.

Donggongon is a very important town for the district of Penampang. The Penampang District Police Headquarters, Penampang District Library, and the Penampang Sports Complex, are located in Donggongon. It also feature a popular weekly tamu ( Market ) in the town every Thursday and Friday where thousands of people gather to buy households products, foods, and traditional handicrafts such as bangles, headbands or gongs. The town boast itself as having the longest shopping mall in Sabah, Megalong Shopping Complex, which was opened in 2010, state of the art Fire Station and numerous sundries and restaurants. There are also numerous pubs and karaokes in this town ( about 30 of them ).

Papar is the name of a town as well as a district located in West Coast Division of Sabah, east Malaysia. It is situated 38 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu and is one of the main stops on the North Borneo Railway. Papar is also a major stopover point for people travelling by car from the southern Sabahan towns of Sipitang and Beaufort to Kota Kinabalu.

Tuaran is a town as well as a district located in West Coast Division, in the northwest of Sabah, East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Tuaran district has an area of 1,166 square kilometres and an estimated population of 94,100 in 2006. About half the population consists of ethnic Dusun, a third ethnic Bajau, and some Chinese. It has a distinctive nine-story Chinese pagoda as a prominent landmark.

Nearby tourist attractions are the Mengkabong Water Village and the Penimbawan Water Village, with stilt houses built by the Bajaus over the shore. There are three big resorts in Tuaran District: The Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort, the Mimpian Jadi Resort, and the Sabandar Resort. In addition, there are several small 'resorts' offering accommodation, food, and water activities.

The town has the great advantage for being a stopover town for travellers from the north towns ( Kudat, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, and Tenghilan ) to the state capital, Kota Kinabalu which is 34 km to the south of Tuaran. The town has been expanding fast and but is now limited by the Tuaran river which borders the town on three sides, almost circling it.
